God’s Will

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approvewhat is the will of God – what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.

Paul continues his gather ’round talk by saying that Christians are not to look like the world. So often today when someone says that they are a Christian no one can tell the difference between them and everyone else. Jesus addressed this when he compared the church to salt and light in Matthew 5:13-14. Salt is only good for food when it acts like salt, seasoning and preserving. Light is only good when it reveals what is hidden by the darkness. The way that we do this is through the transforming, or changing, and the renewing of our minds. The thing is, we cannot, by ourselves, transform our minds. We must allow God to do this, but if we do not renew our minds, it will change back into what it was.

So how do we renew our minds? We must take it away from the influences that draw it to the world, and put things before it that influence it toward God’s ways. Psalm 1 addresses this EXACTLY! Verse 1 tells us what not to do, then Verse 2 tells us that we are to ENJOY obeying the Lord’s commands and to meditate on those commands. Meditation is not necessarily sitting there legs crossed with your eyes closed chanting. Meditation is basically focusing on either one thing or nothing. For the follower of Christ it would be on the Bible, God’s commands and instructions.

A common question you will hear in Christian circles is “what is God’s plan for my life” or a statement that says basically that. Paul tells us that if our minds are transformed and renewed, then we will be able to figure that out. He then gives three characteristics of God’s will: it’s good, well pleasing or totally agreeable, and perfect or totally complete.

So we can be comforted by the fact that God’s will is not hidden from sight. If we are looking in the light, we will find it. It’s when we are stumbling around in either twilight or darkness that we cannot find it.

It’s not an easy task and it takes time, but what is your strongest desire right now? If it’s to do the will of God, then you’re going to have to work where God is, and read what He has said. This isn’t just a quick 5 minute God thing, it should last through the day. Keep drawing your mind back to Him, or it will never be renewed!

Until next time, Have a Blessed Day
